The World Humanitarian Day was created with the aim of honoring all those who work for humanitarian causes. Many of these workers (we can even call them heroes) risk their lives, acting in inhospitable and violent scenarios, with the sole objective of helping people who find themselves in vulnerable situations caused by different factors such as: wars, natural disasters, epidemics.
To celebrate this day, the UN General Assembly, through Resolution A/63/l.49 of 3 December 2008, designated the 19th of August as World Humanitarian Day. This date is used to remember the 22 UN workers, including the Official Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Iraq, Sergio Vieira de Mello, who were killed in a bomb attack on UN headquarters in Baghdad in 2003.
However, World Humanitarian Day also highlights the different aspects of humanitarian action, as well as mobilizing people around the world to champion humanitarian causes. Each year, the World Humanitarian Day is dedicated to a specific theme, with the aim of bringing together partners from across the humanitarian system to advocate for the survival, well-being and dignity of people affected by a variety of crisis situations and also to fight for the safety of humanitarian workers.
This year, 2022, the importance, effectiveness and impact of humanitarian work will be highlighted, with the theme: “It Takes a Village”. This year’s campaign will highlight the thousands of volunteers, professionals and people affected by crises who provide a wide range of assistance, including food, water, shelter and medical aid, among others. These are the people who, away from the spotlight and out of the headlines, come together to help alleviate the suffering of others and bring a little more hope into the lives of those in need. But above all, it is important to remember and honour humanitarian workers and humanitarian causes not just one day a year, but every day. To join forces and develop strategies aimed at improving working conditions, with greater safety for these very special workers who do such important work on behalf of so many people in situations of need.

O Dia Mundial Humanitário foi criado com o objetivo de homenagear todos aqueles que trabalham em prol das causas humanitárias. Muitos desses trabalhadores (podemos até dizer heróis) arriscam as próprias vidas, atuando em cenários inóspitos e violentos, com o único objetivo de ajudar pessoas que se encontram em situações de vulnerabilidade causadas por diferentes fatores, tais como guerras, catástrofes naturais e epidemias.
Para celebrar este dia a Assembleia Geral da ONU, através da Resolução A/63/l.49 de 03 de dezembro de 2008, designou o dia 19 de agosto como sendo o Dia Mundial Humanitário. Esta data serve para lembrar os 22 trabalhadores da ONU, incluindo o Representante Oficial do Secretário-Geral das Nações Unidas para o Iraque, Sérgio Vieira de Mello, que foram mortos num bombardeamento da sede da ONU em Bagdad, em 2003.
Entretanto, o Dia Mundial Humanitário também serve para destacar os diferentes aspetos da ação humanitária, além de mobilizar pessoas ao redor do mundo para defender as causas humanitárias. A cada ano o Dia Mundial Humanitário se dedica a um tema específico, com o intuito de reunir parceiros de todo o sistema humanitário na defesa da sobrevivência, bem-estar e dignidade das pessoas atingidas pelas mais variadas situações de crise e também na luta pela segurança dos trabalhadores humanitários.
Nesse ano de 2022, será destacada a importância, a eficácia e o impacto do trabalho humanitário, cujo tema será: “It Takes a Village”. A campanha deste ano vem dar destaque aos milhares de voluntários, profissionais e pessoas que prestam assistência em crises das mais diversas formas, desde comida, água, abrigos, a ajuda médica, entre outros. São estes que, longe dos holofotes e fora das manchetes de jornais, se unem para ajudar a aliviar o sofrimento alheio e trazer um pouco mais de esperança à vida daqueles que necessitam. Mas o mais importante de tudo isso é lembrar e homenagear os trabalhadores humanitários e as causas humanitárias não apenas um dia por ano, mas todos os dias. É unir forças e desenvolver estratégias que visem melhorar as condições de trabalho, com maior segurança para esses trabalhadores tão especiais que desenvolvem um trabalho tão importante em prol de tantas pessoas em situações de necessidade.
